Jim addresses the importance of building strong relationships with board members and provides recommendations for doing so. He defines the board’s and executive’s role and discusses how to handle situations when a board member oversteps his or her role by straying into day-to-day management or operations.Jim shares examples from his own career and explains how he responded. Audience members are asked to share their experiences too.Jim also discusses how to handle situations when a staff member goes around the executive directly to the board chair or board member to complain about the executive's management decisions without first speaking with the executive.

About

Jim Roche has spent 24 years reporting to and managing a changing configuration of directors and boards. He ran the Business & Industry Association of New Hampshire (statewide chamber of commerce) for nearly 17 years and has run the Maine Bankers Association for five years.He’s also served on boards as a director himself, giving Roche experience and perspective from both sides of the table. Previous positions include leading a regional chamber of commerce in Upstate New York, and working in economic development, marketing, and public policy.Roche is the former board chair of both the New England Society of Association Executives and New England Chamber of Commerce Executives. Jim is originally from Minneapolis, comes from a family of 10 children, is a father to two children, and a recent grandfather.
